India Travel Blogs

If you’re looking for India travel blogs, inspiration, and informational guides, you’re in the right place. We’re Indians who have lived in India for 28 years and travelled around the country extensively for at least five years.

And we can tell you with certainty, that India is NOT just the Golden Triangle or the Himalayas. In fact, we’ll go out on a limb and say that Maharashtra (which doesn’t feature at the top of most India bucket lists) offers the highest diversity of attractions. And our personal favourite is Madhya Pradesh.

The Land of Diversity

India has long been equated with tigers and elephants, but it is so much more than that. It is a land of stunning diversity, chaos, colours and spirituality.

Living in India can be difficult, because the country is still straddling that difficult ground between old and new. But when it comes to travel, we can safely say that India is pure magic.

Quick facts:

  • India is the 7th largest country in the world with an area of 3.2 million km².
  • India has a Hindu majority of 80% but its citizens practice at least 5 other religions.
  • With 1.3 billion people, India has the second highest population in the world.
  • India has the 6th highest GDP in the world but a very low per capita income.
  • There are 29 states and 7 union territories in India.

Yes, that’s a lot of area to cover! But obviously, you won’t be covering all of it. Given the vastness of India, it doesn’t make sense to try and see the entire country at once. Focus your travels on one of these parts of India: north, south, east, west, central, north-east or the islands.

Road trip to Malshej Ghat

Drive to Malshej Ghat

It has always been my dream to drive down to Malshej Ghat in the thick of monsoons and lose myself in its blankets of misty greenery and waterfall-streaked mountains. I got my chance during one July weekend when the rains had subsided to a gentle, occasional shower. We embarked in a little grey Wagon R LXI, powered by a neat set of CEAT Tyres post breakfast.

Pune reminiscences

Pune landscape

Two years in Pune, at an age when my personality was evolving and I soaked up new experiences like a sponge, have given me a fair idea about the city’s draws and limitations. Tucked away in the resort-like environment of FLAME (Foundation for Liberal and Management Education), I looked forward to weekends with the enthusiasm of a bushy-tailed 21-year-old. Solo or accompanied by a friend, I’d board the bus to the city and look forward to movies, lunches, shopping, pampering and exploration.

Experience Agra, the Mughal way

Taj Mahal at sunrise by Gerard McGovern

The world famous Taj Mahal may have put Agra on the map for tourists but truth be told, this ancient city is alive with many other atmospheric monuments and mausoleums. Shrouded in the legacy of the Mughal Era, they carry almost as heavy a weight of mystical history as the Taj. For starters, Agra Fort and the nearby Fatehpur Sikri are two other UNESCO World Heritage Sites, though not parts of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Although best known for its reign under Akbar, Agra was mentioned even in the much older Mahabharata.

Maharashtra Nature Park

Blue Tiger Butterfly at Maharashtra Nature Park

The monsoons have been abundant this year and the vegetation has ripened to a deep shade of green. There are no other visitors on this Sunday and the silent paths between the woods echo our footsteps. After speaking briefly to the librarian and perusing the books and displays on the biodiversity of the park, we begin our trail.

A tigress (tiger) at Pench National Park

To our right, we saw three graceful forms walking towards us. They were Collarwali and her two daughters, both remarkably different in their temperament. While one stuck to her mother, the other one, more aloof, was determined to chalk a different route and walk on her own. She was the one I enjoy photographing the most. Her defiance shone through in her shapely eyes.

Travelling to India? Here’s a checklist

Taj Mahal by Dennis Jarvis

Despite the negative rhetoric about safety, cleanliness and ease of getting around in India, the country attracts tourists by the hordes. Is it the chaos that enchants the foreigners or the colours? Is it the curious rural faces or the endless expanses of untouched green (dwindling but still there)? Whatever the reason, the travellers aren’t deterred by the disorderly potpourri that is India. Here are a few travel tips to make your sojourn through India easier and more magical.
